Organic Chemistry Crash Course (Online)
Organic Chemistry is often a confusing topic for many students, very often because of the way that it's taught. Too much attention is placed on memorising reactions for particular functional groups, without spending enough effort to understand the underlying driving forces of organic reactions.
Organic Chemistry is a discipline with a few simple rules that govern most of the reactions that occur. At Chemistry Domus, Chung will help students develop an understanding of the features of different organic molecules, apply the basic governing rules, and therefore more easily predict the kinds of reactions that the compounds will undergo.
Think of Organic Chemistry as a language, and mechanisms as the grammar of the language. Here at Chemistry Domus, Chung will help you understand the language of Organic Chemistry, and then speak it fluently to ace Organic Chemistry questions.
Online Crash Courses
At Chemistry Domus, we have designed our online classes to be just as effective as our physical ones.
Online crash courses will follow the following format:
-
On-demand videos for the key concepts to be covered for the week will be uploaded, and the corresponding set of notes and worksheet will also be emailed to the student.
-
Students are expected to watch the videos, and complete the review notes and questions before their respective LIVE tutorial sessions.
-
During this time, students can WhatsApp Chung at any time to clear up any doubts they might have on the videos or worksheet.
-
Students will then attend a 2-hr LIVE interactive tutorial session with Chung, where they will continue to drill carefully curated questions to reinforce the concepts and skills that were highlighted in the videos.
-
Two-way communication is strongly encouraged during the LIVE tutorial sessions: Chung will be constantly querying the students to ensure an active learning process, and students can also at any point in time, ask a question and clear their doubts.
-
Students can rewatch the videos whenever they want to understand more difficult concepts, or to grasp more complicated exam skills. Videos for each topic will be available to the student for one month after the LIVE tutorial session. During this time, students can continue to WhatsApp Chung to clarify any concepts or skills.
Organic Chemistry Crash Course
This topic-specific intensive crash course will teach Organic Chemistry from a holistic point of view, so that students are equipped to recognise key characteristics of different organic compounds, and therefore become very proficient with organic transformations and corresponding reagents and conditions.
Students will be expected to drill through a large number of actual exam questions, so that they can learn the strategies in doing the few main types of Organic Chemistry questions:
-
Isomerism
-
Mechanisms
-
Distinguishing Tests
-
Synthesis
-
Elucidation
Chung will be pointing out areas of improvement to each student individually, and building up their confidence in Organic Chemistry.
The Organic Chemistry Crash Course will be organised into four main topics:
1. Mechanisms (the "Why" of Organic Chemistry)
Review the five mechanisms explicit in the syllabus, and concepts including the flow of electrons in organic reactions, the as well as the stability of intermediates and how they relate to major products. Learn strategies and skills to do mechanism application questions.
2. Transformations (the "What" of Organic Chemistry)
Learn to see each organic reaction as one of the seven transformations (types of reactions), and learn ways to categorise the many reagents and conditions that you need to memorise for the syllabus. Learn strategies and skills to do synthesis questions.
3. Resonance (the "Anomalies" of Organic Chemistry)
Review the concept of delocalisation and resonance, and see that many of the anomalies in Organic Chemistry (resonance stability, partial double bond character, unexpected acidity etc.) can be explained by this important phenomenon. Learn strategies and skills to identify the presence of delocalisation, and to answer application questions.
4. Elucidation (the "Forensics" of Organic Chemistry)
Put everything together, and learn the strategies and skills to answer Distinguishing Test questions, as well as put down proper deductions and structures for Elucidation questions.
Each topic will consist of
-
1.5 to 2 hrs of on-demand videos and review practice questions,
-
a 2-hr LIVE interactive online tutorial with the timings detailed below, and
-
WhatsApp consultation with Chung for clearing of any doubts related to the topic.
Time Commitment
Students who are signing up for this course should be prepared to spend about 5 to 6 hrs per topic (including the 2-hr in-class time) for the four-day crash course:
-
Students will be expected to watch 1.5 to 2 hrs of videos for each of the topics before class. As they watch the videos, they will go through between 8 to 12 questions that will help them review key concepts and skills related to the topic.
-
They will then attend the 2-hr tutorials. Chung will first clear any questions they have from the videos and review notes, and then continue to drill questions to lock down key concepts and skills.
Fees
-
Students are required to sign up for the entire course of four topics.
-
$480 for complete Organic Chemistry Crash Course of FOUR 2-hr LIVE interactive tutorial lessons, plus at least another 7 hrs of on-demand video lectures. That is equivalent to a total of 15 hrs of content time.
-
A $150 non-refundable deposit will be collected (by PayNow / PayLah / bank transfer) at the time of registration. This will be applied to the course fees on completion of the registered lessons. The balance of the fees will be collected (by PayNow / PayLah / bank transfer) one day before the start of the first lesson.
-
Fees are non-refundable, and there will not be a possibility of make-up classes for the crash courses. If a student cannot attend a lesson for good reason, they will be allowed to make-up the lesson during one of the regular 2-hr lessons. This should be completed before the end of August 2020, or the fees for the missed lesson will be forfeited.
Overall Methodology at Chemistry Domus
-
Key concepts will be explained and then reinforced by doing actual exam questions.
-
Individual mistakes will be pointed out. These mistakes often include the use of wrong concepts, common pitfalls, and poor presentation of answers.
-
Students can also clarify doubts after lessons.
